Why cats?

It’s crazy how much of the internet is taken up with cats! - It’s also not surprising. We need space. We need uncomplicated love. We need comic relief and we need to be distracted from our very busy heads.

Cats also keep the rats at bay - and have done so since the dawn of civilisation. From the moment humans began to produce more food than their immediate needs, stockpiling for winter or hard times - rats and mice became a BIG problem. A life threatening problem. Enter the tiny, fluffy, cute and very capable predators from Northern Africa.

They began to hang around our early cities and we noticed they were amusing. We noticed they were soft and clever and made a soothing sound. We noticed that their kittens were impossibly adorable and our children played with them.

What we don’t seem to notice these days, is the most profound benefit of living with cats - or any other pets! Cats don’t live in their heads. Cats don’t regret failures, don’t pine over lost love, and don’t panic about the future. They live in the present and ONLY in the present.

During interactions with our pets we are gently brought to, and held, in the present moment with them. It’s just what we need. It’s no wonder research has found that having pets significantly improves health and wellbeing.
