About my wildlife artwork…
My work leads viewers into the gaze of creatures who experience the same world from different minds and with different sensory inputs. I want to provoke questions about what ‘consciousness’ and ‘intelligence’ mean. Have our human biases blinded us from recognition and respect for different forms of consciousness?
There are growing human endeavours to find or communicate with intelligent life beyond Earth. That’s exciting! Still, we don’t have a good track record of compassion and respect for species right here on Earth that look and act differently from us. We even struggle with humans who look and act differently. How prepared are we to be meet life beyond?
As a foundation to better stewardship of our planet, I am driven to promote deeper respect for diverse forms of life and ways of experiencing the world. Having studied evolutionary biology, I am convinced that life is very likely to exist beyond this tiny planet. Meanwhile, at home, better relationships with nature are essential not only to preserve our natural heritage and resources, but for our ongoing mental wellbeing.
