About my artwork

My message:

My portraits of diverse animals share one message in common: we are not alone. This message lies at the heart of my work, as an artist, designer and environmental educator. Supporting human-nature connections is the ultimate goal of everything I do.

There are two layers of meaning in my work.

1) Intellectual - I express my view that non-human species are sentient and have consciousness that - while different from ours - warrants respect and care. It is a view increasingly supported by biologists and neuroscientists.

2) Emotional - I express my emotional response to diverse creatures. Emotions encompass love, a sense of freedom, awe, excitement, wonder, and often sorrow or anger at humanity’s treatment of nature.

Materials:

Colour portraits are created on timber, canvas or paper (framed). I build a coloured, textured background with acrylic paints and stone powders. The subject in the foreground is created with layers of soft pastel and oil pastel. After curing, all layers are coated with multiple applications of polymer varnish to secure them and allow for non-framed works to be touch resistant and cleanable with a damp cloth.

I’m now also expanding my collection to include works on paper with graphite, ink or colour pencil (professional, lightfast grade). See my sketches for early ideas. Works on paper or timber can be shipped internationally. If you have any questions please send me a message via my contact page.
