About my artwork
My message:
My portraits of diverse animals share one message in common: we are not alone. This message lies at the heart of all my work, as an artist, designer and environmental educator. Contributing to connections between humans and other forms of nature are the reason for everything I do. My life’s mission is to inspire others towards deeper relationships with non-human nature.
There are two layers of expression in my work.
1) Intellectual - I argue that non-human species have sentience and consciousness that - while different from ours, warrants respect and care. Science increasingly shows us the remarkable diversity of intelligence across species.
2) Emotional - Whether it’s love, a sense of freedom, energy, sorrow or joy - I use colour, line and texture to express my emotional response to the lives of creatures that draw my attention.
Materials:
Colour portraits are in oil pastel on acrylic background. I mix stone powders with acrylic base paints to achieve deeper texture, so that I can be more creative with oil pastel layers. Portraits on paper are usually framed, but works on canvas or timber are protected with multiple layers of mat varnish instead.
I am currently working on an expanded portfolio that includes pencil and ink portraits on card. See my sketches for early ideas. Works on paper can be shipped internationally at low cost. If you have questions about materials, my process or ideas for commission - your questions are very welcome via my contact page.
